{"id":1016,"date":"2016-10-31T08:15:30","date_gmt":"2016-10-31T08:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tailsdogblog.com\/?p=1016"},"modified":"2022-03-30T14:01:09","modified_gmt":"2022-03-30T13:01:09","slug":"startling-flashes-and-loud-noises-helping-your-dog-to-deal-with-party-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/startling-flashes-and-loud-noises-helping-your-dog-to-deal-with-party-season\/","title":{"rendered":"5 tips if your dog is scared of fireworks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Fireworks season is fast approaching &#8211; and even with lockdown and the challenges of social distancing &#8211; loud noises, bangs, whizzes and pops can be really frightening for our dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your dog is scared of fireworks, the key to getting them (and you!) comfortable with them is called <strong>desensitisation<\/strong>. And, with a little bit of prep work on your part with these tips below, we\u2019re sure you can get your dog used to the sound of fireworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-are-dogs-scared-of-fireworks\"><strong>Why are dogs scared of fireworks?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dogs tend to be scared for two reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Their hearing range is double that of humans &#8211; meaning they hear noise at a higher range of frequencies. If there\u2019s loads of fireworks going off, that\u2019s a lot of noise to cope with<\/li><li>It\u2019s a new noise &#8211; if your dog wasn\u2019t exposed to certain sounds when they were a puppy these new loud noises can be really scary.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-get-your-dog-used-to-fireworks\"><strong>How to get your dog used to fireworks<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip 1<\/strong><br>Play firework sounds in the weeks leading up to fireworks season. Gradually adjust the volume up and down to help your dog get used to the noises, and reward them when they react well.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip 2<\/strong><br>Try not to reward anxious behaviour. We know it\u2019s tough &#8211; when our dogs are scared, all we want to do is comfort them. Our dogs are also very aware of our behaviour, so if you\u2019re anxious or worried, your dog can feed off it, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip 3<\/strong><br>Taking your dog out earlier in the day means they\u2019re less likely to come across firework sounds that could spook them when you\u2019re out in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip 4<\/strong><br>Use the TV or radio to distract your dog &#8211; and keep your curtains closed to block out any flashing light coming from outside. Have puzzle toys at the ready to take their mind off what\u2019s going on outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip 5<\/strong><br>Make sure your dog has their own safe space &#8211; if your dog is used to a crate, they will often use this as a safe place for them to relax. If not, try making a den on the sofa or between two chairs so if they get overwhelmed, they\u2019ve got somewhere to retreat to and feel enclosed and safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-vet-advice-for-especially-anxious-dogs\"><strong>Vet advice for especially anxious dogs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your dog is particularly anxious, you can buy calming aids, collars and pheromone diffusers. These can help your dog to relax on nights where there\u2019s lots going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a bit of practice, they\u2019ll soon learn that fireworks are nothing to be scared of.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to loud noises, our dogs (and some of us too) just really don&#8217;t like it.
