Absolutely! Just like humans, dogs need to have their teeth taken care of. Teeth are an important part of a dog\u2019s health to maintain and yet <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">4 out of 5 dogs over the age of 3 have gum disease, which suggests that thorough <a href=\"https:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/2019\/11\/14\/your-dogs-dental-health\/\">dental care in dogs<\/a> can often be overlooked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gum disease is caused by a buildup of plaque and tartar around the gum line. If teeth are not routinely cleaned, buildup can result in gingivitis, bad breath and potential tooth loss. Dental work can often be very painful, both for the dog and for the owner\u2019s bank balance, but brushing your dog\u2019s teeth is a great way to reduce the risk of gum disease and can also be a fun activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jIwGaoVJ2pU&amp;w=560&amp;h=315]<\/p>\n<h2><b>What you\u2019ll need<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A dog toothbrush <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dog friendly toothpaste<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Toothpastes can come in a variety of flavours including meat, broth and salty and can be bought from your local vet clinic or pet shop. Our Head Vet Sean recommends ideally cleaning your dog\u2019s teeth every day, or at least a minimum of 3 times a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to brush your dog&#8217;s teeth<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whilst most humans know how to brush their own teeth, dogs can be more stubborn and reluctant to let you lift their lips, let alone put a brush in their mouth. Here are Head Vet Sean\u2019s tips for teeth cleaning:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Get your dog used to the idea of\u00a0invading their personal mouth space by lifting their\u00a0lips and opening their mouth to look at their teeth. If you reward your dog with treats or affection, they will soon become more relaxed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Put some of your dog\u2019s toothpaste on your finger and get your dog to lick it off. Your dog will most likely enjoy the flavour. This is a good way of getting them used to the toothpaste before the regular teeth brushing begins.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Put the toothpaste on the brush and angle the bristles at a 45 degree angle against your dog\u2019s teeth. This will ensure that you massage the gum line. This is a key focus.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4072\" src=\"https:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/teeth.jpg\" alt=\"dog teeth cleaning \" width=\"418\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/teeth.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/teeth-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/teeth-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/teeth-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" \/><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The majority of plaque accumulates on the outer surfaces of all the teeth. Brush here first to remove plaque from your dog&#8217;s teeth.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brush in small circles to reach where the gum meets the teeth. If a slight bleeding occurs, don\u2019t worry &#8211; \u00a0this should improve with time as the gums become used to brushing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Helping the process become regular<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once teeth cleaning becomes a part of your dog\u2019s weekly routine, they&#8217;ll will get used to doing it regularly. Start off slow and start with only brushing a few teeth and build up gradually to brushing more each time. After you\u2019ve built up, each session should ideally last about 2 minutes. If your dog appears to be agitated, stop and try again later. It can be a fun activity and shouldn\u2019t have to be a daily chore or struggle!
