In honour of Chinese New Year, we\u2019ve put together a list of 5 dog breeds that originated in China, and some facts you may not have known about them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1943 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/chowchow-1.png\" alt=\"chowchow\" width=\"330\" height=\"330\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Name:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Chow Chow<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Origin:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Northern China<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Known for:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Their blue-black tongue and dense double coat that gives it a ruff or mane-like appearance<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Originally bred as:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400\">A general-purpose working dog for herding, hunting and guarding<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Did You Know:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">In Chinese, the breed is referred to as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Songshi Quan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> which means \u201cpuffy-lion dog\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The coat of a Chow Chow can vary between cream, fawn, red and blue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Elvis Presley once had a Chow Chow named Getlow<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1945 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/sharpei.png\" alt=\"sharpei\" width=\"330\" height=\"330\" \/>Name:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Shar Pei<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Origin:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400\">China<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Known for:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Their distinctive deep wrinkles and their blue-black tongue<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Originally bred as:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400\">A Chinese farm, hunting and fighting dog<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Did You Know:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The Shar Pei was named as one of the world\u2019s rarest dog breeds by Time Magazine and the Guinness World Records in 1978<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The breed was not recognised by the American Kennel Club until 1992<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The population of the breed declined during the Communist Revolution and they soon faced extinction. However, they\u2019re believed to have originated in Africa and have been referenced as the African Hairless Terrier in many 19th Century texts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The Chinese crested can vary from the Powder Puff (with fur) and the Hairless (without fur), both of which are born in the same litter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">A hairless Chinese Crested dog called Sam was the winner of the World\u2019s Ugliest Dog Contest for 2 years in a row<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Chinese Crested dogs have appeared as characters in film and TV including: 102 Dalmatians, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Ugly Betty and Hotel for Dogs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese breeds are often accompanied by fascinating ancestry.
