You\u2019ve seen the videos \u2013 you know lots of dogs go bonkers for peanut butter. It makes a great training treat too. But before you grab a jar and a spoon, it\u2019s important to know that not all peanut butter is safe to give your dog. Here\u2019s what you need to know. <\/span><\/p>\n

Good news peanut butter fans!<\/h2>\n

The short answer is a resounding \u201cyes\u201d – there’s just a couple of things to keep in mind, and remember to always check the ingredients<\/strong>. Some peanut butters contain an artificial sweetener called xylitol<\/strong>. This ingredient is safe for us but toxic to our dogs. Xylitol isn\u2019t just in peanut butter \u2013 look out for it in things like yoghurt and toothpaste too.<\/span><\/p>\n

And as with all things, peanut butter is something that should be shared with your pooch in moderation. It can be very high in fat so make sure you\u2019re not over-feeding them by keeping track<\/a> of your dog\u2019s daily calories.<\/p>\n

What if my dog eats <\/span>peanut butter with xylitol<\/span>?<\/span><\/h2>\n

If your dog eats any peanut butter that contains xylitol, contact your vet \u2013 even if it was just a nibble of your PB on toast. It\u2019s best to be on the safe side when it comes to xylitol poisoning.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the symptoms of xylitol poisoning <\/span><\/h2>\n

The symptoms of xylitol poisoning normally appear within half an hour of your dog eating something that contains xylitol. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Muscle weakness<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Trouble walking<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Seizures<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Liver failure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Is xylitol-free peanut butter healthy for dogs?<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Xylitol-free peanut butter is fine to feed your dog from time to time, as part of a balanced diet. The nutritional benefits of <\/span>peanut butter for dogs<\/span> include:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • High protein content<\/b> \u2013 including a high level of the amino acid arginine, which supports your dog’s heart, lungs, kidneys and immune system. <\/span><\/li>\n
    • Contains flavonoids<\/b> \u2013 which help control blood sugar and support your dog\u2019s immune system.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Energy-rich<\/b> \u2013 great for pups who need lots of fuel to grow. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Moderation is key, because peanut butter has some not-so-healthy features too:<\/span><\/p>\n

      • High in calories <\/b>\u2013 too much can lead to weight gain, especially for older dogs who don\u2019t need the extra energy to fuel their growth.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Added salt and sugar<\/b> \u2013 both can be detrimental to your dog\u2019s health, so avoid brands that include them.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Unhealthy accompaniments<\/b> \u2013 skip the classic PB&J as jam contains too much sugar for dogs. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
