If, like us, you get \u2018that look\u2019 from your dog when you\u2019re enjoying a snack, you\u2019ll know how tempting it is to share a little of the joy. But in terms of your dog\u2019s health, it\u2019s not a great idea: giving your dog human snacks makes it much harder to maintain their healthy weight. And while there\u2019s plenty of <\/span>human food dogs <\/span>can<\/span><\/i> eat<\/span>, the most popular snacks aren\u2019t good for their health \u2013 and some can even cause them harm. <\/span><\/p>\n

So before you go offering crisps to your peckish pooch, it\u2019s worth knowing what\u2019s OK as part of a balanced diet, and what\u2019s best kept off the menu. It\u2019s also worth bearing in mind that there are better ways to give your dog the nutrients they need \u2013 which is why we always recommend routine mealtimes and a <\/span>balanced, nutritionally complete diet<\/span>.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Can dogs eat peanut butter<\/span>?<\/span><\/a><\/span> They sure can \u2013 it\u2019s a good source of protein. We recommend it over feeding whole nuts (which can be a choking hazard). Just be careful that the peanut butter\u2019s not a \u2018sugar free\u2019 or \u2018lite\u2019 version \u2013 these often contain xylitol, which is dangerous for dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can dogs eat popcorn?<\/b>
\n<\/span><\/h5>\n

Plain popcorn \u2013 that\u2019s the air-popped kind with absolutely no added flavourings \u2013 is fine for most dogs, in small amounts. <\/span><\/p>\n

Can dogs eat vegetables?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Dogs can eat veggie snacks like carrots, green beans, and peppers \u2013 all great sources of vitamins and fibre.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can dogs eat meat and fish?<\/b><\/h5>\n

As long as it\u2019s cooked without any seasonings or sauces, it\u2019s fine to give your dog a little meat or fish from time to time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Food not to give dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n

Chocolate<\/b><\/p>\n

Chocolate is dangerous for dogs<\/span><\/a><\/span>. To avoid any accidents, it\u2019s best to make sure this sweet treat is never left within range of your dog. If your dog does sneak a bit of chocolate while you\u2019re not looking, get them checked over by a vet as soon as possible. <\/span><\/p>\n

Crisps<\/b><\/p>\n

Because they\u2019re so high in salt and fat, crisps aren\u2019t good for dogs to eat. A single crisp might not seem like much to us, but most dogs are a lot smaller than we are \u2013 so a crisp can take up a much bigger proportion of their recommended daily calories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sweet or salted popcorn<\/b><\/p>\n

Flavoured popcorn \u2013 anything but good-old plain \u2013 is generally too high in saturated fat, sugar or salt for dogs, so it\u2019s best to keep this delicious movie night indulgence all to yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ice cream<\/b><\/p>\n

Dogs are lactose intolerant, so if you\u2019re wondering whether dogs can eat ice cream, the answer is \u2018no\u2019. If it\u2019s a hot day, giving your dog an ice cube is a much better option. <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Chips, sausages, and saturated fats<\/b><\/p>\n

Delicious human snacks like chips and sausages are way too high in saturated fats to be good for dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cheese<\/b><\/p>\n

Dairy products of any kind can upset your dog\u2019s digestion. But cheese is also high in calories and salt, so it\u2019s even more important to keep off your dog\u2019s menu. <\/span><\/p>\n

Begging for snacks \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Giving your dog human snacks can teach them bad habits. Offering odds and ends throughout the day doesn\u2019t just disrupt their regular mealtimes, it also encourages them to scavenge and beg for food. If you do want to give your dog a snack, serve it in their bowl to help them recognise what\u2019s for them and what\u2019s not. This encourages good mealtime behaviour. <\/span><\/p>\n

A great way to keep boundaries firm is to keep human snacks to a minimum, and stick to <\/span>treats<\/span><\/a><\/span> made especially for dogs. These generally take longer to eat, so they\u2019re more rewarding for your dog, and will keep them full for longer too. Many also have specific benefits, for example, <\/span>dental treats<\/span><\/a><\/span> help keep your dog\u2019s teeth and gums healthy by reducing the buildup of plaque and tartar.<\/span><\/p>\n
