Cooked plain \u2013 without any added fat, seasoning or sauces – fish is a brilliant addition to your dog\u2019s diet and helps everything from their coat and skin to their joints (thank you omega 3!)\u00a0 What\u2019s even better there\u2019s so many types of fish that are great to give your dog.<\/span><\/p>\n

We think fish is so good we include it in your dog\u2019s kibble recipe (if they need it!), bake it into a special fish stew <\/span>wet food<\/span><\/a> recipe (thank cod), and pop it in a treat, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the benefits of fish for dogs?<\/b><\/h4>\n

It\u2019s easy to digest<\/b><\/p>\n

Ideal if your dog has a <\/span>sensitive stomach<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s rich in Omega-3\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Oily fish like salmon or tuna are rich in fatty acids, otherwise known as <\/span>omega-3<\/span><\/a> – which is great news for your dog\u2019s skin and coat.<\/span><\/p>\n

It tastes good<\/b><\/p>\n

The different textures and flavours of fish add variety to your dog\u2019s diet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s hypoallergenic<\/b><\/p>\n

Even if your dog is sensitive to other foods, it\u2019s unlikely they\u2019ll have a reaction to fish. Meat proteins are usually the cause of <\/span>allergic reactions<\/span><\/a> in dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n

At tails.com, we use hydrolysed salmon in some of our <\/span>hypoallergenic diets<\/span><\/a>. Hydrolysed means the proteins have been broken down so they\u2019re easier to digest, and even less likely to trigger an immune response.<\/span><\/p>\n

What fish shall I cook?<\/b><\/h4>\n

Here are all the types of fish we like to cook our dogs:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

White fish<\/b><\/p>\n

Lean fish including cod and haddock are a great source of protein and B vitamins: B6, B12 and niacin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Salmon<\/b><\/p>\n

Salmon is an excellent source of protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Has your dog fallen for our <\/span>hand-baked salmon biscuits<\/span><\/a> yet? Made with salmon and linseed for an extra boost to your dog\u2019s coat, they\u2019re the perfect omega-packed treat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sardines<\/b><\/p>\n

This oily fish is rich in essential fatty acids. Watch out for the bones \u2013\u00a0 sardine bones may be small, but can still get caught in your dog\u2019s throat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tuna<\/b><\/p>\n

Can dogs eat tuna? In moderation, yes. It\u2019s packed with essential fatty acids but also high in mercury and histamine, so only let your dog have a little bit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Atlantic Mackerel<\/b><\/p>\n

A good source of omega-3, Atlantic mackerel is lower in mercury than other types of mackerel, so it\u2019s safe for your dog to eat.<\/span><\/p>\n

What fish can dogs not eat?<\/b><\/h4>\n

Now we\u2019ve done the good catch, it\u2019s time for the naughty list. Sadly not all fish is good for your dog, and the fish and seafood your dog can\u2019t eat includes:<\/span><\/p>\n

Smoked salmon<\/b><\/p>\n

Plain salmon is fine but when this nutrient-rich fish is smoked, it’s too salty for your dog.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shellfish<\/b><\/p>\n

Shellfish – prawns, oysters, mussels, and clams – are filter feeders, so can contain dangerously high levels of toxins like heavy metals. They\u2019re also a <\/span>common cause of food poisoning.<\/b> While green-lipped mussels can be a rich source of glucosamine, there are other, safer ways to give your dog this joint-friendly supplement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Breaded or battered fish<\/b><\/p>\n

While fish is good for dogs, stodgy, greasy coatings definitely aren\u2019t. Stick to varieties from the fish counter, and give chip shop versions a miss.<\/span><\/p>\n

How to prep fish for your dog<\/b><\/h4>\n

It might seem obvious, but if you\u2019re not used to handing or cooking fish, please bear these things in mind before giving your dog some fish to try:<\/span><\/p>\n

Has it got bones in? And is it fresh? Like us, dogs can choke on bones. Make sure you\u2019ve removed any stray ones before serving (we\u2019ve been known to use tweezers for this very task!). When it comes to serving fish, it\u2019s got to be fresh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
