You probably suspect the answer already: <\/span>dog\u2019s <\/span>can<\/span><\/i> have cheese<\/span>, but it\u2019s high in lactose, fat and salt, so it isn\u2019t great for their digestion. But then cheese isn\u2019t great for humans either: it\u2019s all about knowing the facts, and weighing up your options.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is cheese bad for dogs<\/span>?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The short answer is \u2018it can be\u2019 \u2013 while we don\u2019t recommend you <\/span>give dogs cheese<\/span>, some owners do use small amounts of cheese as a treat. Cheeses with added ingredients can be actively harmful, like garlic and certain blue cheese moulds, so definitely keep your dog away from the Boursin or the Christmas cheese board. Most other <\/span>cheese can be OK for dogs<\/span> in small amounts \u2013 but there are lots of healthier options for delicious doggie treats.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps a better question is \u2018how <\/span>bad is cheese for dogs<\/span>\u2019? You might decide to use cheese for training, or to help your dog take medication. But there are other delicious ways to help the medicine go down \u2013 check our <\/span>handy guide<\/span><\/a><\/span>, based on habits, disguise and reward. And when it comes to training, there\u2019s a whole range of dog-specific treats you can use, which will be just as effective and much better for your dog\u2019s digestion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alternatives to cheese for dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n

There\u2019s certainly no way we\u2019d say <\/span>cheese is good for dogs<\/span>: it\u2019s a high calorie food, and because most dogs are lactose intolerant, it can be hard for them to digest. Healthier treats they’ll enjoy just as much include:<\/span><\/p>\n

Meat <\/b>\u2013<\/span> cook it plain, and go for lean meat<\/span><\/p>\n

Vegetables<\/b> \u2013 green beans, carrots, and sweet potato are all great alternatives to cheese <\/span><\/p>\n

Peanut butter<\/b> \u2013 a small amount of peanut butter makes an excellent indulgent treat. Just keep the quantity low, and make sure it\u2019s xylitol-free. <\/span><\/p>\n

Cheese and your dog\u2019s diet<\/span><\/h2>\n

We don\u2019t recommend including cheese as a regular part of your dog\u2019s diet \u2013 especially if your dog needs to lose weight.
