Little and often is best, as this keeps training fast and fun. Grab a few moments when you can throughout the day and run through two or three tricks together. Before meals is ideal \u2013 your dog will be more inclined to work hard for their treats when they\u2019re hungry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Positivity, consistency and repetition are the secrets to success when it comes to <\/span>puppy training<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Start simple<\/b><\/p>\n

Your dog doesn\u2019t understand long sentences, so stick to commands that are just one or two syllables long. \u2018No\u2019 and \u2018sit\u2019 are good starting points. Over time, you can combine these commands to master more complex tricks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Be consistent<\/b><\/p>\n

Chopping and changing commands will confuse your dog, so settle on a word or phrase for each action and stick with it. Make sure everyone who looks after your dog uses the same commands, otherwise all your hard work could go unrewarded.<\/span><\/p>\n

Praise, don\u2019t punish<\/b><\/p>\n

Forget the old-school advice about reprimanding your dog when they do something \u2018wrong\u2019 \u2013 this just teaches them to be fearful. Again you can help by holding a treat in front of them, then slowly moving this towards the floor. As they watch the treat, they\u2019ll naturally lie down. As soon as they do they\u2019ve earned the treat.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Stay\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

Comfortable with \u2018sit\u2019 and \u2018down\u2019? Next is <\/span>how to teach your dog to stay<\/span> while you gradually move away. Set your dog up for success by building the distance a couple of paces at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Come\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

Combine with \u2018stay\u2019 to create a fun game \u2013 while also teaching your dog a skill that\u2019s important for staying safe off the lead.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Leave it\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

This command is useful to stop your dog eating or playing with something they shouldn\u2019t. It\u2019s also great for building trust.<\/span><\/p>\n

With enough practice and patience, mastering a new trick can take as little as a couple of weeks. But a dog\u2019s training is never done \u2013 there\u2019s always a fancy new trick or instruction to try. Make training part of your dog\u2019s daily routine, and have fun mastering new skills together at every stage of their life.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are some good training rewards for dogs?<\/b><\/h2>\n
