Hay fever in dogs does indeed exist \u2013 but not in the same way it does in humans. While both are caused by an allergy to pollen, the dogs experience hay fever in very different ways, and with very different symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is dog hay fever?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hay fever in dogs is known as atopic dermatitis, or atopy. It\u2019s primarily an allergic reaction to tree, grass or plant pollen, which presents as severely itchy skin. It can also be triggered by house dust or other allergens in the environment. Much like with humans, it\u2019s largely a seasonal issue in spring and summer, but if your dog is particularly sensitive, especially to grass pollen, then it can affect them all year round. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What are the symptoms of hay fever in dogs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The usual signs that your dog is suffering from atopy include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">persistent scratching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">red or inflamed skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hair loss, and greasy patches of skin in the armpit or belly areas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">itchy feet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recurrent ear infections <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If these symptoms persist and your dog\u2019s skin is broken down from scratching too much, they may also suffer bacterial or yeast skin infections. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There may be the odd runny nose or eyes, but if your dog keeps sneezing, that\u2019s not hay fever. Sneezing could instead be indicative of a different irritation, like dust, or something being stuck in the nose or throat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What are the treatments for hay fever in dogs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The good news is that there are lots of options to help alleviate the symptoms of hay fever for your dog. When they come in from playing or exercising outside, quickly bathe or wipe them down to remove the pollens that have settled on their coat. If their skin is already irritated, there are medicated shampoos available to help soothe the inflammation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Preventative measures include keeping your dog indoors as much as possible on high pollen count days, even if they really want to go and play. This brings its own problems, however, as your dog won\u2019t understand why they can\u2019t go out and could cause further behavioural problems. So when you do let them out, ensure you follow some of the treatments mentioned above when you let them back in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If your dog is particularly sensitive, you can speak to your vet for other treatment options. They may prescribe steroids or antihistamines to control the itch. In some cases, your vet may carry out blood tests to find out which allergens your dog is reactive to and develop an individual vaccination to desensitise them to these allergens. This treatment is known as immunotherapy. \u00a0There are some other medications developed in recent years that can really help resolve the itch in dogs whose cases have not responded to these traditional approaches, so speak with your vet about options.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How common is hay fever in dogs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Certain breeds are more likely to have hay fever for genetic reasons. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">West Highland terrier<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cairn Terrier<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Boxer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pug<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lhasa Apso<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shih Tzu<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Golden Retriever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dalmatian<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Standard Poodle<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Around 20% of all itchy skin issues in dogs are caused by atopy alone, with another 20% caused by atopy combined with a food allergy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Related blog: <\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/24\/allergies-in-dogs\/\"><b>Allergies in dogs<\/b><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If your dog does suffer from atopy (or a similar skin condition), we can help by providing a unique recipe that supports skin health and integrity, including ingredients like omega-3 and 6 fatty acids to help reduce dryness and irritation.
