And, because it\u2019s never too early to start (you can begin as soon as your puppy settles into your home), training can become part of their daily routine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, it\u2019s really fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to start training your puppy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are bonding sessions as much as learning ones. It\u2019s as much for you as your dog. Practice regularly and commands will quickly become second nature. If your puppy starts losing focus, becomes sleepy or distracted, quit while you\u2019re ahead and try again next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few basic commands you can try at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sit<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The useful all-rounder if you need to distract your puppy or stop them from doing something they shouldn\u2019t.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Hold a treat<\/strong> in front of your puppy\u2019s nose, then start moving the treat up and over their head.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>As they focus on it<\/strong>, your puppy will naturally fall into the sitting position.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>When they sit, reward them<\/strong> for a job well done.\u00a0<\/li><li>Then <strong>start introducing the word \u2018sit\u2019 <\/strong>so they learn to associate the word with the action.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Down<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How to get your puppy\u2019s attention and help them settle on command.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Hold the treat <\/strong>in front of your <a href=\"https:\/\/tails.com\/gb\/age\/puppy-food\/\">puppy<\/a>, then <strong>slowly lower it to the floor.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li><li>As they follow the treat with their nose <strong>they should naturally lie down<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li><li>When your puppy is down, <strong>praise and give them the treat.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li><li>When they start getting it,<strong> pair the action with the word \u2018down<\/strong>.\u2019<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Stay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A great lesson in patience &#8211; not something puppies are known for!
