The great thing is if you start early, the easier it will be for both of you. Getting them used to brushing now will ensure happy smiles all round as they grow and grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is your guide to cleaning your puppy\u2019s teeth at home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What you\u2019ll need<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Use dog-friendly toothpaste. Dogs don\u2019t know how to spit after brushing, so dental products made for humans aren\u2019t going to be suitable for them. The toothpaste we use contains toxic ingredients like fluoride and xylitol that could make your pup unwell. Toothpastes that have been specially made for dogs mean you\u2019ve got safe ingredients <strong>and<\/strong> tasty flavours, which is a win win.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Dog toothbrush <\/strong>\u2013 smaller bristle heads and longer handles make light work of a good clean\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Finger brush \u2013 <\/strong>Goes on your finger to help get inside your puppy\u2019s mouth safely\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Dog-safe toothpaste \u2013 <\/strong>tasty<strong> <\/strong>flavours like beef, chicken and peanut butter\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Helping your puppy get used to brushing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tooth brushing needs to be a positive experience for your puppy from the start. Get them used to you touching their mouth, teeth and gums and you\u2019ll build trust &#8211; a little patience goes a long way!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Go slowly<\/strong> &#8211; start desensitising your puppy by gently touching the inside of their mouth&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Put some tasty toothpaste on your finger &#8211; <\/strong>mimic the motion of a toothbrush&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Be gentle<\/strong> &#8211; and upbeat when introducing the toothbrush,&nbsp; take it slow&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Give praise and treats<\/strong> &#8211; when they\u2019re calm and relaxed&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Repeat the steps daily &#8211; <\/strong>until your puppy feels comfortable at each stage&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Stop or go back a step or two if they\u2019re overwhelmed &#8211; <\/strong>keep it fun and positive&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Take each stage slowly, and only move onto the next when your puppy is calm and comfortable. That way you can easily reach all areas of the mouth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Squeeze a pea-sized blob<\/strong> onto the toothbrush&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Brush your puppy\u2019s teeth <\/strong>at a 45 degree angle&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Focus on the outer edge<\/strong> of your puppy\u2019s teeth \u2013 this is where most of the plaque builds&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Focus on each area individually <\/strong>brushing in small circles<strong> <\/strong>to the gum line&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Avoid brushing too hard <\/strong>as this can damage the gums &#8211; bristles shouldn\u2019t bend too much<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Brushing your puppy\u2019s teeth every day is best, but if you can\u2019t do them daily, aim for three times a week.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What else can you do?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as regular brushing, you can help keep your puppy&#8217;s teeth clean in loads of other ways, too. Nothing\u2019s as good as regular brushing though.
