So when it gets cold outside, should we be asking, \u2018does my dog need a coat or jacket, too?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It all depends on the breed. When you\u2019ve got a Siberian Husky, the clue is in the name. They join dogs like Malamutes and Chow Chows who were all bred for life in very chilly climates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you haven\u2019t got a dog with a halo of thick fur, these are the ones we think might benefit from having an extra layer, especially if they\u2019re not used to cooler temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Smaller dogs<\/strong>, like Chihuahuas or Italian Greyhounds, find it harder to retain body heat<\/li><li><strong>Short coated breeds<\/strong> &#8211; think Greyhounds or Whippets &#8211; might like more of a snuggle in cooler temperatures<\/li><li><strong>Underweight<\/strong> dogs have less body fat and lower muscle density, so find it hard to keep themselves warm<\/li><li><strong>Senior <\/strong>dogs can really feel the cold as they struggle to regulate their body temperature<\/li><li>Cold weather isn\u2019t great for <strong>stiff joints<\/strong> &#8211; so if your dog has joint problems or arthritis, a coat that also covers their legs will support their joints<\/li><li>If your dog has been <strong>unwell<\/strong>, exercise can help with their recovery, so make sure they\u2019re kept nice and cosy if it\u2019s cold outside<\/li><li>When it\u2019s <strong>freezing cold<\/strong> &#8211; we\u2019re talking minus temperatures &#8211; or there\u2019s lots of snow, most dogs will benefit from an extra layer of warmth if they\u2019re not used to the cold.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"571\" src=\"https:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/11-FB.jpg\" alt=\"Blue the Lurcher in a jumper\" class=\"wp-image-6525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/11-FB.jpg 800w, https:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/11-FB-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/11-FB-768x548.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What about dog boots?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s true, you <em>can<\/em> buy boots for your dog! And they\u2019re actually really useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If paths feature in your walks, you\u2019ll probably come across grit and salt to stop the pavement from getting icy &#8211; this salt can get into your dog\u2019s paw pads, causing irritation. Either make sure you clean their paws when you get them home, or consider investing in a pair of doggy boots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it\u2019s really cold outside, and your dog is whining and stopping to lift up their paws when you\u2019re out on a walk, they might have cold feet!
