Whether you\u2019re a first timer or an old hand, this puppy raising business means you\u2019ll have your hands full for a while.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From socialisation to <a href=\"https:\/\/tails.com\/gb\/age\/puppy-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">puppy food<\/a>, getting them to go to bed, learning to sit, stay &#8211; and come back &#8211; we all want our puppies to grow up into a healthy, happy and socialised dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When there\u2019s so much to think about, we spoke to head vet Sean to find out his top 10 tips to get your puppy ready for the world. Are you ready?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-training-basics\"><strong>Training basics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Start off with teaching your puppy their name &#8211; then focus on recall, sit, and stay. We teamed up with qualified behaviourist, Diane from Superhounds, for a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLzKmdviQxzfEhrEJMTmUUcVDDs__La0CE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">series of super simple videos that you can use at home.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Puppy training: Recall\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uFhNhNaqza0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-right-food\"><strong>The right food<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Proper nutrition is key to keeping your puppy happy and healthy. Their food should have easily-digestible protein (perfect for sensitive stomachs) to support muscle growth, and essential fatty acids like Omega-3 for healthy brain development and super puppy vision. As well as the right veggies and carbs! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding the right food can be tricky &#8211; that\u2019s why at <a href=\"https:\/\/tails.com\/gb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tails.com<\/a>, we take the guesswork away, leaving you with more time to enjoy your new puppy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-proper-routine\"><strong>A proper routine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From mealtimes to regular walks, a good routine will set you &#8211; and your puppy &#8211; up for success. Not only will it help them to feel settled in their new home, but it will help you feel confident, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-toilet-training\"><strong>Toilet training<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first couple of weeks can be tough &#8211; prepare yourself for lots of accidents indoors whilst you nail down toilet training. Taking your new puppy outside regularly will get them used to a proper toilet routine: we\u2019ve got some tips on toilet training from behaviourist Diane <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kpaOqIolnVE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lots-of-sleep\"><strong>Lots of sleep<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For you and for them! Head vet Sean recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/2019\/01\/04\/crate-training-a-puppy\/\"><strong>crate training<\/strong><\/a> if you can &#8211; it will give them a safe space to relax in and set up those all-important boundaries between the two of you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-socialisation-is-key\"><strong>Socialisation is key<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once their jabs are done, you\u2019ll want to head out to the park to burn off some of that puppy energy &#8211; this means introducing lots of new sounds and smells they might not be used to yet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making sure they interact with other dogs (and humans) is really important to build their confidence whilst you\u2019re out and about. Puppy classes can provide a space for your puppy to experience lots of new things &#8211; all under the watchful eye of a professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-keeping-them-safe\"><strong>Keeping them safe<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a legal requirement for all dogs to be microchipped once they\u2019re 8 weeks old &#8211; and once they\u2019re able to go out for walks, they should be wearing a collar with a tag including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Your name<\/li><li>Contact number<\/li><li>Address<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Head vet Sean recommends <strong>not <\/strong>putting your puppy\u2019s name on their tag &#8211; if the worst did happen, it could help potential thieves call your dog over to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-vet-trips\"><strong>Vet trips<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first year of their life, your puppy is going to need regular vet visits &#8211; whether it be for general health checks, or for vaccinations. Getting your puppy used to the vet will benefit them in the long run, so come armed with lots of treats and positive reinforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-first-groom\"><strong>The first groom<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some breeds need regular grooming &#8211; which can be a scary experience for any new puppy! Most groomers will offer a special first-time session where they get to know your dog, and start off with simple things like a quick trim around the face and clipping their nails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like the vet, make sure you\u2019ve got lots of treats to reward them for a job well done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dealing-with-separation-anxiety\"><strong>Dealing with separation anxiety<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting your puppy used to being left alone is an important part of their early training. It can be tough &#8211; nobody likes to hear their dog cry &#8211; but it\u2019s really key to establish those boundaries from a young age. Start off slow by leaving them for just a few minutes at a time, before building it up. Having them crate trained can really help by giving them a safe space to rest when you\u2019re not there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not easy being a brand-new puppy owner, but it\u2019s totally worth it in the end!
