As a canine behaviour expert reveals that many dog\u2019s music preferences mirror their owners<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever questioned if your dog were a person, who their favourite artist would be? Would they be a \u2018Hairy Styles\u2019 fan? Or perhaps they\u2019d like a taste of \u2018Motley Chew\u2019? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, with almost 1,000 people every month Googling \u2018do dogs like music?\u2019<\/em> and \u2018what music do dogs like?\u2019, <\/em>it\u2019s a reasonable thought to ponder\u2026 especially as we humans enjoy a range of music genres.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This got the experts at music licensing company PPL PRS<\/a> thinking\u2026 do different breeds like particular types of music? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

PPL PRS worked with dog food brand tails.com<\/a> scanning thousands of playlists (and so millions of songs) that feature the UK\u2019s most popular breeds of 2022 in the title. Dog owners are evidently making music mixes for their much-loved pet and the similarities denote what works best for each breed!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The results are in \u2013 and fascinating \u2013 to give you a feel for what your dog may like listening to! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u2018Top of the Pups\u2019 chart:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Labrador Retriever (19,381*) \u2013 Rock \/ Pop <\/li>
  2. French Bulldog (13,762*) \u2013 Electro Pop<\/li>
  3. Cocker Spaniel (12,109*) \u2013 Garage Rock<\/li>
  4. Springer Spaniel (5,349*) \u2013 Rock <\/li>
  5. Dachshund (3,893*) \u2013 Pop<\/li>
  6. Golden Retriever (3,232*) \u2013 Indie Pop<\/li>
  7. German Shepherd (2,359*) \u2013 Dance Pop<\/li>
  8. Staffordshire Bull Terrier (2,139*) \u2013 Rap \/ Trap<\/li>
  9. Pug (1,635*) \u2013 Classic Rock<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Staffordshire Bull Terrier owners, watch out, as you\u2019ve got a rap sensation on your hands\u2026 with the top 100 \u2018staffy\u2019 tracks strongly leaning towards the \u2018rap\/trap\u2019 genre. \u2018A$AP Puppy\u2019 is in the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Whilst, less surprisingly, the sweet (yet sassy) Dachshunds have been found to be listening to \u2018pop\u2019 on repeat. Come on, you can\u2019t beat a little Bone Direction! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For Labrador and Golden Retriever lovers, it may only take one hit of indie pop icons \u2018Bast-heel\u2019 or \u2018Fleetwood Mutt\u2019 to boost your pooch\u2019s mood (particularly after a visit to the vets<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Indeed, in a new survey** about the relationship between music and dogs, PPL PRS  found that over half of owners (52%)* revealed that their four-legged friend becomes anxious or stressed when left alone. However, 48%* of these paw-rents believe that playing music or the radio to their dog helps them to relax when anxious or stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If you\u2019re curious to test out these musical preferences with your pup but are unsure about how to recognise a positive reaction, an expert canine behaviourist at tails.com, Carolyn Menteith recommends looking out for \u201cgentle tail wags or swaying, relaxed ears, and steady breathing with any wrinkling above their eyes or at the corners of the mouth smoothing away.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Carolyn adds: \u201cI love the idea of breed-specific musical preferences! I certainly have seen dogs whose musical preferences mirror their owners. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So, I\u2019ve noticed musician\u2019s dogs who seem to love the type of music – or instrument – their beloved human plays, and I\u2019ve seen music lovers\u2019 dogs enjoy everything from opera to heavy rock depending on their personal preference. This is probably more to do with sharing their owner\u2019s enjoyment and pleasure – and that their human is far more relaxed and happier when listening to their choice of music.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Music is a social experience \u2013 and it certainly seems our dogs share that.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
