Others, wouldn\u2019t dream of getting their feet wet! But whether it\u2019s a drink from a pond or a dip in a lake, you need to watch out for blue-green algae when you\u2019re out and about with your dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some types of blue-green algae contain nasty toxins that can make your dog very ill. In some cases, it can be fatal. And if you touch it or swallow it yourself, it can also make you very poorly. It\u2019s more prevalent in warmer weather, so now\u2019s the time to brush up and enjoy a safe summer with your dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-blue-green-algae-look-like\"><strong>What does blue-green algae look like?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, you\u2019d expect it to be a bluey-green colour surely? But that\u2019s only one version of it. <a href=\"http:\/\/chrome-extension:\/\/efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj\/https:\/\/consult.environment-agency.gov.uk\/cumbria-and-lancashire\/blue-green-algae-in-cumbria-and-lancashire\/user_uploads\/blue-green-algae-leaflet.pdf\">\u2018Blue-green algae\u2019<\/a> is in fact a catch-all description for a group of bacteria, called cyanobacteria. They are not even algae really; they just give the appearance of algae when they float on the surface of the water in patches or clumps.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what it can look like in its various guises:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A blue-green scum that looks a bit like pea soup.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Green flakes, greenish bundles or brown dots in a pond, lake or stream.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A green, blue-green or brownish paint on the surface of the water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Foam around the edges of ponds and lakes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where is blue-green algae?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll usually notice it during and after hot spells of weather &#8211; especially after heat waves. It\u2019s most commonly found in non-flowing fresh water, so keep your eyes peeled when walking near:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Streams<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lakes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ponds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rivers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reservoirs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you suspect blue-green algae is in any water along your walk, best to keep your dog on a lead and avoid the risk of them coming into contact with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the symptoms of blue-green algae poisoning?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if your dog hasn\u2019t swum in or drank from contaminated water, just paddling in it is risky. This is because they can ingest the algae when they lick or groom themselves afterwards. The harmful toxins stop a dog\u2019s liver from functioning properly, so take action quickly if you notice any of these symptoms after your dog\u2019s been in contact with water:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vomiting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diarrhoea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seizures\/fitting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weakness, collapse or unconsciousness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disorientation or confusion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drooling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breathing difficulties<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These symptoms can show up just 15 minutes to an hour after contact with contaminated water. Tap the app.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you suspect blue-green algae in the water, hit the app \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceh.ac.uk\/our-science\/projects\/bloomin-algae\">Bloomin\u2019 Algae<\/a>. The UK Centre for Ecology &amp; Hydrology has a citizen science app for reporting blooms of blue-green algae. You can also use it to check a new area you\u2019re planning to go to with your dog. The app is helping speed up awareness and get warnings out quicker to affected areas.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not sure what it is? Give it a miss.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are, of course, some types of floating greenery that are no cause for concern at all, like duckweed, for example. But if you\u2019re in any doubt it\u2019s blue-green algae, we\u2019d recommend sticking to dry land. That\u2019s not the end of aquatic fun for those water-babies though. Be in the know about <a href=\"https:\/\/tails.com\/blog\/2022\/10\/03\/water-sports-with-your-dog\/\">dog-safe swimming<\/a> spots by asking other local dog walkers, skimming your local FB feed\/groups or checking with your local environment agency.
