Tails.com and Purina PetCare: your questions, answered

UPDATED 1st May 2018 – original post from yesterday remains below

Hi Everyone,

We made an announcement yesterday: we’ve chosen to change our investors, and to take investment from Purina. Your responses have helped us realise we didn’t go far enough to reassure you about what won’t be changing. We know how deeply you care about your dog, and how much trust you’ve put in us to give them the right nutrition – we take this very seriously.

So we wanted to be really clear on a few areas you’ve asked us about: quality, decision-making, investment, and our plans for the future. If there’s anything else, feel free to get in touch at questions@tails.com.

The quality of your dog’s food won’t change

Only tails.com kibbles have been specially developed to work with our game-changing customised feeding system. So, if you’re wondering whether you’ll find Purina products in your blend, the answer is no. When we created tails.com, there were no kibbles that did what we needed them to do. Our unique,  custom-made kibbles are at the absolute core of what we do: they’re the only way we can create truly tailor-made nutrition for dogs across the UK. We will continue to use them exclusively.

The change in investor will not change the quality of our food or the decisions we make – we will always put nutrition first. We guarantee we’ll still hold ourselves to the same standards we’ve always used to create our food. We’ve always made sure your dog’s recipe matches their changing needs, and we’ll continue to do so. And we guarantee the quality of our ingredients will stay the same.

We still make our own decisions

Although we’ve taken investment from Purina, we continue to make our own decisions about our food – your dog’s food. The move is from a group of investors on our board, who helped us get up and running, to one long-term investor on our board that can help us do more of what we do best. We’re still run by our own management team, and the team here at tails.com are all proud shareholders.

We chose this investment to do more of what we do best

Our commitment to providing tailored nutrition is as strong as it was the day we were founded. It doesn’t change with this investment. Purina has recognised what we’ve achieved in four years, see its potential for the future, and wants to nurture it, not change it. We chose this investment to help us do more of what we do best: high-quality nutrition, tailor-made for every tails.com dog.

Our plans: more people, more support, better technology

You and your dog are absolutely essential to tails.com. So, we will be investing in the kinds of things our customers tell us they care about. This investment allows us to hire more people in the team, which means more support for you and your dog (for example on the phones and email), plus improvements to our ground-breaking technology on the website and behind the scenes. We will also invest in marketing and advertising to spread the word about our life-changing nutrition.

We’re here to change the world of pet food for good – it’s our company’s mission, and it guides every decision we make. This new relationship, combined with all our passion and your support, means we’re one step closer to achieving it.

Best wishes,
Orinta Gaucyte

Original post published 30th April 2018

At tails.com, we’re on a mission to change the world of pet food for good – and to help us do that, we’ve chosen to take a significant investment from Purina PetCare. It’s a cause for celebration here at tails.com HQ: all the office dogs are in party hats today.

I joined tails.com (with my own dog Bardi) as Customer Experience Manager over three years ago. Since then I’ve made sure that you, our customers, are at the heart of what we do.

And for you, very little changes with this investment: our mission stays the same. However, you might have some questions on your mind, so my team and I have put together some answers below.

You can, of course, get in touch at questions@tails.com.

Best wishes,

Orinta Gaucyte

Customer Experience Manager

(P.S. I now have Nelson under my desk as I write this, here in the office. He’s my very springy little Springer pup, and he looks wonderful in a party hat.)

Will the quality of my dog’s food change?

No, we’ll continue to make the same high quality tailor-made nutrition your dog loves. That means we’ll still use our own range of customised tails.com kibbles, and we’ll continue to blend them according to your dog’s unique recipe, every month.

Should I expect any changes to the packaging?

We are always looking for ways to improve our packaging to serve you better. But we haven’t got any changes planned as part of this new relationship, so you’ll still see the waggy, bushy tail on your box each month.

Will I still be able to buy my dog’s favourite flavours and treats?

Of course! We’re not making any changes to the flavours in our recipes, and our treats will be as irresistible as ever. It’s business as usual in the tails.com blending rooms, and it’s great to have you with us, as always.

Will you still be based in the UK?

Yes, we will. We’ll operate as a standalone company, with the same management team and employees. Our head office, including our customer experience team, will continue to be based in dog-friendly Richmond; our blending rooms will still be in Heathrow, London. So whether you call, email or drop us a message on Facebook, we’re still right here for you.

Will my price change?

The new relationship with Purina PetCare will not change our pricing decisions. It’s always been important to us to bring you a new level of tailored nutrition at high street prices. Over the past year, as our costs, such as delivery, labour and ingredients have gone up, we have increased the price of some of our ranges. Wherever possible we work to avoid passing costs on to our customers, and we’ll continue to do so.

  2. I think a lot of people will probably be very put off by this as Purina is owned by Nestle which a lot of people boycott including myself. Such a shame as our dog is so fussy and she really likes your food but unfortunately I cannot help to line the pockets of such an awful unethical company such as Nestle, so as soon as I find an alternative it is with sadness that I will be cancelling my subscription.

      • I appreciate that you are expecting to stay stand alone, but I, like many people are concerned about the venture with Purina. It is not noted for being a high end dog food company. Purina must clearly be receiving some benefit from this deal? Hopefully it is not at the expense of your pet food blends. I am not interested in supporting a huge American dog food company. I will entrust that is the situation changes and Tails loses control of their establishment, you will advise your loyal customers.

I hear you and we’ll always keep you up to date as we have done with this announcement. Purina understand that the way we do things, tailored nutrition for every dog, is the future of dog food. Knowing that we’re the only company that can do what we do, they want to be a part of it and help rather than change anything.

    • We joined Tails only a couple of months ago and you have gone and made a major mistake by accepting investment from Purina. Their ideals and morals are nothing like what Tails have built your pet food business on. Our dog Beth has been on a vetinary metabolic food diet as she can gain weight easily and it took us a long time to make the decision to change to Tails as the blend you send Beth is very close to the vets one. Purina will let you believe they will not interfere but give them time and they will. I am sorry but we will have to think long and hard about this situation and we may stay with Tails in the meantime but if we think Purina has made a move to change the ingredients we will leave for sure.

      • Hi Michael,

We understand how important our blends are to dogs like Beth. I want to assure you that we’ll never compromise on the quality of our ingredients and that’s a guarantee. We know the difference a tailor-made blend can make to your dog’s wellbeing, not to mention your own happiness at seeing just how much they thrive on their food. We make all the decisions about our food and we’ll continue to do so moving forward.

I’m sorry you feel this way, as a fellow animal lover and dog owner I completely appreciate your concern. We don’t believe in animal testing- and neither do Purina. The health and happiness of your dog will continue to be our number one priority.

We’d hate to see you go, but of course we understand that it’s a personal decision for you and your dog.

Do you do a treat that will encourage my dog to give back a ball when on the park? He’ll drop it at home, I’ve even put a hot dog in his mouth whilst he’s got the ball but he won’t drop the ball. Tried lots of different treats.

I’m struggling to understand how you at Tails.com who claim to be so into animal welfare can ‘get into bed’ with a company with very dubious business practices, unethical animal welfare standards such as mass rabbit farming, continues animal testing etc, sorry but will be looking to source my dogs food elsewhere.

Even started my new fur babies on it and guess what they love it too. They look forward to meal times with a new enthusiasm actually barking and fussing till it’s in front of them. Then they settle down comfortable and with less gas. Bonus for us lol. ? Happy pets happy us. ??

      • It is such a shame you have decided that Nestle Purina should have an interest in your company. Part of my decision in feeding my dog your tails.com food was that your company appeared to have firm ethics and some integrity. Sadly, I no longer feel that this is the case. Nestle will work hard to take over your brand or destroy it. Why else would they be interested? Generally, reworked ingredients from the confectionary industry are put into dog food, which is why Mars and Nestle have pet food companies; Pedigree and Purina. I think tails has been very naive or very greedy. I don’t much care which it is. I’m disgusted.

This is a bad thing for Tails.com and I am now looking for and alternative feed for our dogs. This I fear is a slippery slope for Tails.com and not one that will benefit the company. If your values really are the same.. I’m cancelling now… my Baxter loves your food… the only one that has ever fit with him. I am very careful about whom I buy my products from and Nestle is number one on my list to boycott… I will be looking elsewhere. Our commitment to providing tailored nutrition remains the same and it has not changed with this investment. All that has happened is that Purina has seen all that we have achieved and they can also see our potential so they want to nurture it, not to change it. We chose this investment to help us reach more dogs and provide high quality nutrition, tailor-made to ensure they live their best lives. Our morals have not changed and we only ever want to give dogs like Baxter the very best nutrition they can get.

I was polite at first, but I’m reading these songsong-ish replies from Tails, and I do NOT think you understand the grave concerns of people who’ve gone through the trouble of researching dog food options and who are aware.
Purina/Nestle are the NRA of dog food. They will tip the balance in their favour at the end of the day, and Tails needs to understand how contradictory it is of them to partner with such a corrupt institution like it’s no big deal!
Give your clients a promise, a guarantee of standards, something to show you understand these concerns.

    • Hi Scott,

Thanks for getting in touch, we’re happy to answer any questions you may have. Your dog’s food will still be a blend of our own range of tasty kibbles, so they will continue to receive the same high quality meals using the same nutrition and ingredients as usual. Since your dog’s food is tailor-made you will still not be able to get our products in the store. We’re continuing as a stand-alone business, run by our own management team. We won’t stop delivering the same great products and service that you and others love. We’ll still be based in dog-friendly Richmond with our blending rooms in Heathrow, London.

      Best wishes,

  19. I am right in thinking that the term investment that you use in your communique means that you are now owned by Purina as the parent company?

Am I also right in thinking that at some point Purina will push their own products through Tails as a “centralisation exercise”?

Worked for large corporations and have seen this sort of alignment in the past so was interested in your view on this

    • Hi Freddie,

The investment is not about a new owner – it’s about replacing our short-term investors with a long-term one. We will continue to be an independent company, making our own decisions. If you’re wondering whether you’ll find Purina products in your blend, the answer is no. Our unique and custom-made kibbles are at the absolute core of what we do: they’ve made us who we are and they’re the reason we’ve gotten this far.

I understand money making deals are important for the company to expand but please don’t let the standards slip. Or I and many others may vote with their paws.

I have ordered from you in the past, and would love to start ordering again, because I truly believe this is the best dog food. 49. Packaging: you changed to boxes rather than the cheap formed cardboard trays – this coincided with the last price increase.
We were asked our opinion back then – about the new fancy boxes – which we personally hate. They are a faff to get in and out of, it’s not as easy to stack our supplies and retain easy access. They are cumbersome. Why haven’t you resorted to the old simple trays and passed the saving back to us?

    • Hi Andy,

We updated the packaging of our wet food trays to make sure that they arrive in the best possible condition. Over the past year, as our costs of delivery, ingredients and wages have gone up, we have increased the price of some of our ranges. We actively work to prevent increased costs being passed on to our customers and will always continue to do so.

We had to try and find foods that didnt cause terrible d&v, but she still needed the steroids. This led to her developing horrible reactions to them, we thought it was the end of the road, then a friend recommended Tails, a year on you wouldnt think she was the same dog, her coat had grown back and its shiney and sleek, she has more energy now than she ever had and, although shes not off the steroids completely, its such a low dose the reactions have gone! I work voluntarily alongside UK dog, and cat rescues, most if not all will not touch their product Bakers because of the artificial colourings and addiditves, can I have your assurances none of your products will go down that road and introduce them into your products?
I look forward to your reply.

By volume Purina is one of the worst offenders in the industry, maintaining uniform mediocrity among their wide range of products and they feature 4 times in the worst 10 dog foods in the UK.
After finally finding a dog food with Tails (plus recommending you to friends) that my Cockerpoo enjoys and that doesn’t upset his sensitive tummy, I am really hoping that on reading your Q&A’s that the high quality standard with Tails will still remain.

So to purina it’s alway going to be the bottom line and cost impacts profit which effects shareholders returns. This in turn usually means mediocre ingredients. Can you guarantee that there will be no changes to the quality of the ingredients used?

For a long time pet food was unregulated, and some of the tactics and ingredients these big pet food companies got away with were reprehensible. It’s still not completely on the up and up.

So either purina has changed? Which is hard to imagine, or have they just paid the right price to be involved with a bespoke, natural brand?

Many people are aware of the kick back the vets receive from companies like Purina, much like a pharma company does with a doctor who prescribe their drugs.

Digby loves his Tails mixture. I’ve always hoped it was as ‘pure’ as you have indicated but it’s always subject to what it on your packaging as there is no way to really verify it.

I sound like a crazy consumer, but I’m half American and the WORST nightmare for many people striving to give their dogs the best they possibly can, is to hear a company like Purina is involved.

Whilst we’ve changed our investors, we continue to make our own decisions about our food – Tobi’s food. Only our unique tails.com kibbles have been specially developed to work with our game-changing customised feeding system. So, if you’re wondering whether you’ll find Purina products in Tobi’s blend, the answer is no. When we first started tails.com, we couldn’t find any kibbles that did what we needed them to do. Our unique, custom-made kibbles are at the absolute core of what we do: they’re the only way we can create truly tailor-made nutrition for dogs across the UK. We will continue to use them exclusively. What’s more is that the quality will remain the same as will the same high standards we’ve always used to create Tobi’s food.

This company has received some bad reviews in the past and has also been involved in a law suit when it was claimed that their dog food had actually harmed pets. I may have to think again when it comes to ordering further food for Sandy.

    • Hi Shirley

Despite our change in investment this will not affect the quality of our food or the decisions we make, nutrition will always come first and you wont be finding any Purina products in Teddies blend either. When tails.com was just starting out, there were simply no kibbles that did what we needed them to do in order for them to work with our feeding system. Our unique, custom-made kibbles are at the absolute core of what we do: they’re the only way we can create truly tailor-made nutrition for dogs across the UK and we will continue to use them exclusively.

I have just read your email regarding the investment into your company by Purina. I have to say, I totally agree with Helen Belcher regarding the business practice of Nestle, and I will also, sadly, have to discontinue my subscription for Bruno’s dog food. This is a real shame, as he loves the kibble and seems to be very healthy on it. I also like the ease of having my orders delivered to my door, and I enjoyed supporting a small ethical company.

  125. Hello Carly,
Your rather standardised answer of being still run with your own production facilities sound very nice, but Nestle will want to see a return on their investment. We, as customers, would like to understand what that could be. Or have the owners sold out, pocketed a large cheque, and loaded tails with additional debt? A bit more clarity would go a long way. And by the way, my dogs are also lying at my feet…

From the tails.com position and in regards to what you can expect to see, this large investment will allow us to grow and expand so we can help even more dogs lead happier and healthier lives whilst also ensuring our customers receive the best service possible.

How R U benefitting from their investment and what do THEY get out of this alliance. Truffles is doing so well and I trust Tails.com whereas I don’t trust great big companies like Nestle. You are a great little company. Why do U need them? You be careful they don’t pinch your recipes and repackage them with cheaper, less nutritious ingredients – then they will have just swallowed U up. I want 2 know what their input is.

We chose to take investment from Purina in order to help us do more of what we do best: high-quality nutrition, tailor-made for every tails.com dog. This will allow us to add more people to our team so we can provide more support for you and your dog (for example on the phones and email), plus improvements to our ground-breaking technology on the website and behind the scenes. We will also invest in marketing and advertising to spread the word about our life-changing nutrition.

In regards to pinching our recipes, we do not have ‘recipes’ as such since each dog is different and has different requirements our algorithm then formulates their unique blend and this will not be affected by the investment since we still operate as an independent business. It’s also worth noting that only tails.com kibbles have been specially developed to work with our game-changing customised feeding system. So, if you’re wondering whether you’ll find Purina products in your blend, the answer is no. When we created tails.com, there were no kibbles that did what we needed them to do. I think what folks want guaranteed (myself included) is that the food currently being supplied WONT change and the price remains fair, it’s difficult to see how bringing in a new partner doesn’t send prices higher, especially if the process is remaining the same to be honest. You have not addressed that. You say you are stand-alone, and the food will be just as delicious, but people are asking for guarantees, and you don’t seem to be able to give them. Our animals’ health is more important than big business, which is why I am glad my pet is fussy, and turns his nose up at anything out of a tin or a Purina packet – and thank God remains in good health. I understand this lady’s concerns. Soon they (Purina) will be asking you to make more and more, and your ethics will be compromised. Please give us the assurance, honestly, that not one single ingredient will be changed

    • Hi Susie,

I’m so sorry we haven’t answered your questions how you would have like. I can guarantee that not one single ingredient will change, in fact, your dog will likely be none the wiser to the new investment at all! It’s our high quality ingredients and custom kibbles that have gotten us this far, and Purina want to help us expand and reach more dogs. As is our business model, your dog’s blend will continue to evolve as your dog ages and their health conditions change, but no changes will be a result of the investment.

Many of our customers come to us because their dog’s have sensitivities like Ellie, and we will never do anything to jeopardise their health. Her blend will evolve as time goes on to adapt to her changing needs – but that is all.

You could have at least put some effort in to your replies to people’s concerns. Given that this is shown together on one page, it is so obvious that you have copied & pasted certain replies!

An injection of capital from Purina is a lethal injection, however you paint it. They are not a nice company and my concern is why, as a clearly growing and successful pet-oriented business, you sought investment from your largest competitor and a devilish one at that!!! Did the banks turn you down?

Whether or not you mix the foods in the same way, stay in dog-friendly wherever and have the ‘same’ management shape the kibbles by hand, letting poison into the system just destroys everything I loved about Tails, com: integrity, reliability, ethics and suitability.

As the saying goes: “you don’t poop where you eat!”

    Time to cease my orders…

I too am concerned as just appears another corporate merger for profit
I’m sure it makes economic sense and I see that but the moral aspect is what I would question here
II would think a large proportion of your business is from people who like the more independent and personal touch which will
be lost and also they do not want to contribute if possible to large faceless corporations
I’m afraid I will be looking elsewhere

We’re sorry to hear that you feel that way, we understand that these kind of things can be very personal and you see this as a “sell out”. But we do not see this investment, or our new partners, in this light. Although we have taken an investment from Purina we remain an independent company, making our own decisions about our own food. You say that it’s to be able to get your message out there even more, but paring up with a company that has had numerous contamination scares and welfare concerns in the past, contradicts that ethos I thought you had. Investors always hold the upper hand, once they are on board they will be changes. We recently saw this happen with Copella a brand local to us.

Part of the appeal was that you were a smaller brand- it made it feel more special and believeavle that well being and quality was at heart.

I will be sourcing a new supplier, hopefully a smaller business with the ideologies that I thought you had.

I wish you luck, mostly to your staff who did not have a say in this.

Currently we have healthy dogs, at a reasonable cost, because we choose not to use the mass producers of pet foods with questionable content.

Part of my decision in feeding my dog your tails.com food was that your company appeared to have firm ethics and some integrity. Sadly, I no longer feel that this will be the case. Nestle will work hard to take over your brand or destroy it. Why else would they be interested? Generally, reworked ingredients from the confectionary industry are put into dog food, which is why Mars and Nestle have pet food companies; Pedigree and Purina. We’ll continue to exclusively use our own kibbles and you won’t find Purina products included.

My dog has been very happy on your food and I’ve been happy with your service but I boycott Nestle products as I have ethics and like to sleep at night. Now begins the search for something that suits both me and the pup. Again.

However, what is alarming me is that every time you have answered questions from customers, you have only mentioned the ingredients for kibble won’t be changing. Wilfie has both your kibble and wet food. He is a somewhat fussy Llahsa but he always eats his kibble and most of the wet food that I order from you. I want to understand that you are not changing the recipes for the wet food. If the wet food changes I may well have to consider my loyalty to you.

The big boy waves cash , the small company cashes in, founders walk away with a wodge of dosh. They stay on for a couple of years claiming independence. Goodbye one competitor same old product by Purina eventually. Examples Waterstones then Smith’s then EMI. Pret/ mcDonalds. Innocent, etc etc. It’s not surprising just a bit sad

Please don’t be concerned – the health and well being of the nations dog is our primary concern and this investment does nothing to change that. We’ll continue to use our unique, custom-made kibbles exclusively. They’re fundamental in everything we do and are the only way we can create truly tailor-made nutrition for dogs across the UK. Nestle/Purina do not share your values. They have invested in Tails to make money out of Tails: that is a simple business decision. You are a success and are a rival to them. The solution to that problem is to invest and then…. take over.
I have given Tails to my GSD cross for the last two or three years and he loves it. He is too old (over 12) to change now but I bet my shirt it is only a matter of time before Nestle start interfering in order to make money from you.

We’ll continue to make our own decisions and continue to put your dog’s wellbeing at the heart of everything we do. We’re so happy to have your GSD cross on our food and we’ll make sure he’s still getting everything he needs to thrive in his senior years.

I am very disappointed about this, having only recently become a customer, and will now have to think long and hard about continuing to use your products.
I notice most of your replies to other questions reiterate the goodness of your products and say nothing will change, so perhaps you could explain exactly how Purina fits in to the equation?

    • Hi Sandra,

Of course, we understand that our customers want to know what this means moving forward and rightly so. Purina offered the investment after acknowledging everything that we’ve achieved in the four years since we started changing the world of dog food. Tailored nutrition and happy, healthy dogs is the future of dog food and something we strongly believe we can provide better than anyone else. Purina agree with that and wanted to be a part of what we do.

We chose to accept the investment because it means we can provide a greater service for you, our customers. It means we can employ more team members to offer you and your dog support whenever it’s needed, it means we can spread the word about what we do to more people faster and it means we can continue to improve our already groundbreaking technology.

We’re so happy to have you as a customer and we really hope you’ll stay with us for the next step of our journey.

I am puzzled as you state that nothing is changing including the ingredients, the way you are managed, your offices, price packaging etc so why would they invest? What’s in it for them and how would that affect us as customers. Please don’t copy and paste an answer from above as we deserve to know why.

Rossi currently loves your food and it is very good for his weight management and stomach.

    • Hi Karlana,

It’s a good question and their reasons for investing is why we’ve chosen to take it. Purina can see what we’ve been able to achieve in the four years we’ve been around and understand that no-one else can do what we do. Our custom and unique kibbles allow us to provide dogs of all different shapes and sizes with truly tailored nutrition. Purina understand that this is the future of dog food and they want to be a part of that future rather than change it.

Of course you’d like to know what this means for you and Rossi – who wouldn’t? We’ll be improving the kinds of things all of our customers have let us know they care about. It allows us to hire more people in the team, which means more support for you and Rossi. We’ll be able to make improvements to our already innovative technology and we’ll also invest in spreading the word about our life-changing nutrition across the UK and eventually, the world.

It’s such fantastic news that Rossi loves his food and you’re seeing noticeable changes to his wellbeing. This is exactly why we will continue to do what we do best.

    • Hi Linda

      • Do you test your products on animals?
Does Nestlé routinely test its products on animals?
No. We do not use animal testing to develop conventional foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, cereal and chocolate.
Are you ever required to test new products or ingredients on animals?
On very rare occasions, yes. National authorities require new food products and ingredients to be safe for human consumption, and in certain cases it is necessary to carry out animal tests to demonstrate this.
We can assure you that we use animal testing as little as possible, and that our care of animals always complies with the highest standards. Animal testing should only take place where absolutely necessary, as part of the regulatory process to commercialise a product, or as part of the development of novel food products, such as those with healthcare benefits.
        Why is animal testing necessary?
Animal studies are critically important to make advances in fundamental nutrition and health science.
This research helps to provide the scientific basis for developing novel ingredients, or new nutritional strategies for improving health. This includes medical foods that help people with acute and chronic medical conditions.
What is your approach to animal testing?
Where animal testing is necessary, it is vital that we are fully aware of, and our actions are guided by, our ethical responsibility for the welfare of animals. This includes proper housing, nutrition, care and humane handling.
Any application for animal testing must be submitted to our internal ethics committee for approval, prior to its submission to the relevant authorities.
We make sure that all our employees who look after animals in our research facilities are trained in the care of animals in research, to ensure absolute competency and awareness of the ethical issues involved. We keep abreast of new advances in animal testing, as well as alternatives to animal testing.
When carrying out animal studies, we apply the internationally recognised ‘Triple R’ and the relevant animal welfare principles to ensure that any tests are only used where necessary and that animals are cared for to the highest standards.
What is meant by ‘Triple R’?
The three Rs stand for: replace, reduce and refine. This means that we are always developing new scientific methods that, ideally, remove the need for animal testing altogether wherever possible, reduce the number of animals being tested, and refine the testing process.
        How are these studies regulated?
All animal studies are evaluated and approved by the official animal ethics authority at a local level. The studies are done in full compliance with all relevant animal welfare regulations, such as the European Union Directive on the protection of animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes.
We also support the international standards for animal welfare provided by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), and by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The small company that was growing fast in the most well organised, tangible, accessible & ethical way ! ! Really sad guys that you too put money before anything else, there would have definitely be other more respectable ways to grow your company, maybe slower but clearly more fruitful in the long run. Becoming part of the Purina business is the worse choice you could make.
Its so sad we now have to source another company like the one you were until this day and so, many other customers will do the same not agreeing with Nestle’ and similar companies’ ethos. A real sad choice.

It’s devastating to hear you feel this way but we see this investment differently. Our priority and focus is completely on nutrition and this has certainly not changed. We’ll continue to make our own decisions, using our own products and all of us here at tails.com will continue in our mission to provide as many dogs as possible with the tailored diet they deserve. We chose to take the investment to help us achieve our goal quicker and improve the personalised support you all know and love.

I understand that personal choice plays a part in big decisions when it comes to your dog’s wellbeing and we fully appreciate that. We really hope to see you again in future.

As far a a joint venture is concerned Purina/nestle are only motivated by profit for the shareholders, it’s a shame you are no longer an independent producer as I believe this was the main reason I was attracted to your products for both Fin and Saphie.
I need assurance that no products will be changed or substituted. Also adding additional ash to products as a filler.
    This is such a shame.

You seem to have this standard response whenever anyone mentions this, and I find that a little worrying too! My dog loves your food and is very healthy for his age. Neither he nor I would be very happy if that were to change. I personally can’t see Purina staying io=n the background for very long. I hope you don’t come to regret your decision as it will affect so many of us!

I’m so glad that your dog loves the food and is the picture of health. The benefits of the tailored nutrition we provide is exactly the reason that Purina wanted to be a part of what we do. While we’ve chosen to take a significant investment, we continue independently, making our own decisions and putting your dog’s health at the forefront of everything that we do. This is our number one priority and this new development does not change that at all.

  233. I too share the concern of your current customers who have commented earlier.
If Nestle is investing in Tails then it is likely that they see Tails as an innovative competitor. Buying-in to Tails gives Nestle access to innovation and new channels of marketing prior, I suggest, to acquisition of the business and adoption of the Tails brand as Purina.
While I would welcome being able to buy Purdie’s food from a retail outlet I envisage that it will be at a price when Nestle secures control, i.e. no reduction and more likely an increase.
While it is likely to be congratulations to the business owners, who will make their fortune, perhaps deservedly, it is likely to be commiserations to your existing customers who may bite the bullet but, more likely, take their custom elsewhere and your employees who will find that Richmond ceases to be a manufacturing centre.
The Purina formula has helped Purdie maintain a healthy alimentary tract (consistently firm poo) and a healthy weight.
Possibly unrelated but I have noticed a reduction in the weight of Purdie’s monthly food supply. Sorry, but without guarantees on quality and price I shall be looking for a new source of kibble.

Thank you for your feedback, I want to tell you that I can guarantee the quality of Purdie’s food and ingredients will not change and any decisions we make regarding prices will not be in reflect of the investment. We are are a standalone company who make our own decisions about our products. We care so much about what we do and would never let anything jeopardise that. Purina will help us spread our product and services ever further, so more dogs can enjoy the same tailored nutrition that Purdie already does.

  235. Sorry to say that like so many others, I’m very disappointed by this move. A massive part of the attraction of tails.com for me was the very fact that you were an independent company producing an affordable, superior product to the likes of Purina. Once they have you in their financial grip, they will undoubtedly start calling the shots at some point in the future in order to realise a return for their investment. Quality will be compromised and prices will increase. What a shame that an initiative such as this that has clearly gained such a solid customer base, will now fall into the hands of the very companies you set out to compete against by producing a far superior product and with the best interests of our pets at heart.

My Poppy has allergies and is very sensitive and I can’t risk her being exposed to the shoddy food that Purina produces. I do hope you are right and nothing will change but let’s be honest it is all about money so whilst all may be well now, further down the line your excellent current standards will be compromised. It saddens me when good companies, with solid morale values, sell their soul to big corporate giants. Sad day….

We’re all realists and know that as soon as a large conglomerate takes over a smaller company they leave them alone for a short while but then start meddling with the profit margins, product design and brand. Do you really think Purina care about your “hand mixing department” in Heathrow or your offices in “dog friendly Richmond”? No. They don’t. They are a huge pet food brand who will gobble up Tails.com by leveraging all those great brand values that you’ve worked so hard to build up and then over time sell us a sub-standard product. As soon as I’ve found a good alternative, I’m off. If I wanted my dog to eat food by Nestle, I wouldn’t have started giving my hard earned money to Tails.com and would have bought a mass produced and much cheaper dog food. You’ve made a big mistake. Your reputation and brand is priceless, but your Senior Management Team/Board of Directors have decided it’s not and have put a price on it.

I hadn’t realised that Company was linked with Nestle, which is worrying for me as I remember all the furore caused many years ago by with Nestle’s influence on mothers in third world countries to use reconstituted milk under unhygienic circumstances instead of breast feeding, leading to dysentry and other related illnesses. Purina won’t be making a large investment without influence of some kind and so how long will it be before the tail starts to wag the dog, I wonder? I won’t be moving my business yet but will wait and see. Separately, I am also concerned at the massive amount of packaging. Can this not be reduced at all, or at least the quality of it? In fairness I do re-cycle it but nevertheless … Finally (!) Your customer service is second to none. I hope that won’t change in driving to improve profit margins.

We hear you. We continue as an independent company that make our own decisions and exclusively use our own products. Our commitment to providing tailored nutrition to dogs across the whole of the UK is going nowhere.

Westies are prone to skin disorders but he’s never had an issue with your food and his coat is beautiful. His sister Ruby (who steals his food) has been eagerly awaiting a range of cat food.

I hope cat food is in the pipe line and Ollies food remains unchanged.

I see the same copy and paste response to others who have raised issue, but surely it won’t be long until purina will be expecting to have more input into the products.

Sub may need to be cancelled should that happen.

    • Hi Caryss,

Making dogs like Ollie happy is exactly why we do what we do. This investment will not affect any of our decisions or the quality of our food and ingredients, we promise you that. Since day one, our goal has been to provide as many dogs as possible with the tailor-made nutrition our food, and only our food, provides. We’ll continue to help Ollie thrive and hope to be able to do something similar for Ruby in the future.

Purina/Nestle have many bad reviews and produce food not up to the standard of your own. What is Purina getting from this deal? They are not becoming a majority stakeholder for nothing. They have invested hugely for a reason, and would expect something in return. What are Purina getting from this deal and for their investment?

    • Hi Nick,

What we do is unique to tails.com – providing tailored nutrition to dogs all over the UK. We strongly believe that this is the future of dog food and are incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved since starting four years ago. Purina recognise that only we can do this and they want to be a part of this future rather than change it. We chose to take this investment because it’s on our terms where we’re able to make our own decisions. This is why we can guarantee the quality of your dog’s food will not be changing.

  263. This worries me greatly. It is always such a shame when independents get infiltrated by big corporations purely to lessen the competition. I liked the fact that Tails was independent and have happily paid more for my Teds food. It is only a matter of time before they will want a bigger return on their investment and you will have to cut corners and reduce the quality as a result. You can keep replying with the same scripted responses but at the end of the day I recall Nestles mantra that Cadbury’s won’t change they said – production will stay in the UK they said – look what happened there! This is a sad day in my opinion and I will be researching alternatives for the not too distant future. Such a pity you’ve been hoodwinked.

What a shame that you sold out to a big US megacorp, much like Cadbury’s & Boots did before you. Don’t insult our intelligence by suggesting nothing will change and you’re a “stand alone company” because we all remember how Cadbury’s turned out. Purina will want profits & that means something has to give. I don’t buy Purina dog food because, quite simply, it’s cr*p and I care about what my dog eats.

I am so disappointed that Purina have managed to get their unethical claws into your much loved ethical company. It would be interesting to hear how they will benefit from their investment if your much loved healthy tailored recipes are to remain the same. This does not seem possible if they expect a return on their investment. It is difficult to see how Tails will be able to avoid additions of cheaper unhealthy cereal and fat contents while still being able to offer Purina financial rewards for their investment. I will be cancelling my orders and will have to look elsewhere for delicious healthy food for Bailey. So disappointed. My daughter who introduced me and several friends will also be cancelling

This means we’re able to provide more dogs with truly tailored nutrition and improve multiple aspects of our service. We’re trailblazing the dog food market at the moment and Purina have recognised our potential as the future – tailored nutrition for all of our pets.

Not sure why you would want to accept Purina as an investor, nor what is in it for either of you. Whilst nervous, Missy loves your food (over and above other generic senior kibbles) so I am not about to change it just because, like many others, we are fearful of your investor’s long term plans. The crunch is yet to be seen.
So long as you continue with the present formula, Missy will continue to be a customer, and I will continue to pay your bills. One further point – cardboard boxes can be recycled; please can you use a bag which can be recycled – it is such a waste of natural resources otherwise.

All too many large companies join up with smaller companies with verbal promises of support and service to that company. Usually a year in and things will start to change. It’s taken so long to find a complete dog food service for my dog. I am gutted. All you needed to do was create a complete cat food service as a stand alone. I’m flabbergasted that Tails have “gotten into bed” with a company like Purina whose ethics are considered dubious to say the least. I have supported Tails.com for some considerable time for the very reason that most of your client base have, which is to have a fully traceable and ethically produced prescriptive dog food.

However, there is nothing you have said in previous post replies to others to make me confident that absolutely nothing will change and your stock answer which is clearly the agreed company statement, “that you will continue to use …(insert dog name here) ” a blend of our own range of tasty kibbles, so he/she will continue to receive the same high quality meals with high quality ingredients and nutrition” There is no such thing as a free lunch, Purina, if not immediately, WILL want to mass produce your brand and to do so usually means using cheaper ingredients.

Bella has pancreatitis and I spent a long time finding the exact mix for her condition, I’m more than disappointed that Tails have sold out.. shame on you !

    • Hi Anne,

I’m really sad to hear you feel this way, though I appreciate that this is a personal decision for you and Bella.

As a dog owner myself, I understand your concerns- we’d never want you to have any doubt over the ingredients in Bella’s food. We can guarantee that the quality of the ingredients we use in Bella’s blend will not change. We know how important it is that Bella’s health condition is taken into account and we’d never compromise on this. Her health and happiness will continue to be our number one priority.

Purina have seen how far we’ve come over the last four years, and they want to help us to reach even more dogs on our journey. This investment means that we’ll be able to help more dogs like Bella find a tailored diet, and support customers like yourself better than ever.

We’d hate to see you go, if you have any more questions please do send us an email to questions@tails.com and we’ll be happy to help.

I do hope you stay true to your word of not changing any of your ingredients as I’ve been very happy feeding fidget your products and it’s helped her tremendously, it would be a shame to loose your customers over this, but if I notice a change in my dog for the worse I too will leave tails. Hope all goes well with the merger.

You can tell Fidget not to worry – we won’t be putting Purina kibbles into our blends at any stage and our ingredients will remain the same high quality and standard. Her food will remain the same and she can continue to love it just as she always has.

Thank you for your kind words and give Fidget a little treat from us 😉

  298. Hi to everyone at Tails.com, my dog Chomsky loves his food, dental chews and treats, and I also love them because I know he is getting the best, but both Chomsky and myself are a bit concerned about Purina getting involved, like many others I am aware of Nestle’s very questionable practices, when it comes to dog and cat food Purina don’t think of what’s best for the animals but only what is best for profits. I’m sure at Tails, com you always have the best interests of the dogs at heart and not the profit, so I will continue using Tails.com for as long as Chomsky loves it, and Twinkle is looking forward to trying the cat food if you start it. On a last note, please tread cautiously with Purina and Nestle, all they care about is profits and not the animals at all. Thankyou from me and Chomsky.

    • Hi Pam

So awesome to hear how Chomsky is getting on and enjoying all his Tails food and treats. We would love to welcome Twinkle into the Tails family soon too – we don’t have any concrete plans for cat food just yet but definitely want to offer Twinkle her own tailor-made food in the future.

Our commitment to providing tailored nutrition is as strong as it was the day we were founded and this will not change with this investment so you and Chomsky can expect to receive the same high quality tailor-made blends to your door each month 🙂

Thank you so much for your support and big hugs to Chomsky and Twinkle from the Tails team

You say that this will not interfere with the prepping of the way you produce the nibbles.
I was really disappointed with my last 2 deliveries. I did see a difference in quality, it had a LOT of food dust and I informed yourselves on this. I wonder is this the start of the decline in producing quality food.

  301. I must say this is a very disturbing development, purina has a very poor reputation in regard to the quality of their pet foods.

Archie is very happy with his food from tails.com and I would be reluctant to change to another brand but unfortunately because of the investment from purina I may have to. I cannot accept that purina will not have any input into how the kibble is produced and the quality of the ingredients.

    Very disappointed.

We’d really hate to see you and Archie leave us, especially as Archie has been enjoying his blend. I understand your concerns and I can guarantee that the quality of the ingredients we use in Archie’s blend will not change as a result of this investment. Our unique kibbles and blends are still at the very heart of what we do, and this won’t change.

Archie will still receive his blend each month, and we’ll continue to be here to support you both with any questions or concerns you may have. This investment means we’ll be able to help even more dogs just like Archie- quicker.

I hope you’ll choose to stay with us, we’d love to provide Archie with his blend for many years to come.

  303. I share Julie Moor concerns about your “Your dog’s tailor-made food will still be a blend of our own range of tasty kibbles…..”. You aren’t answering the specific questions which people are rightly asking. Both Nestle and Purina have a bad reputation amongst people who take the trouble to look beyond the fancy advertising, so saying “Purina are long term investors who share the same values as we do when it comes to our pets”really isn’t helping your cause. My dogs have done well on your kibble as part of their diet and I need to know that the ingredients will remain exactly the same. The message “a blend of our own range of tasty kibbles” is vague to say the least – has or will the ingredients and their source differ in any way?

If Purina are investing in your company we can be sure they aren’t doing it out of the goodness of their hearts – so if, as the ‘bog standard reply’ is trying to suggest, your products will remain exactly the same my question has to be what is in it for Purina?

    Reply
    • Hi Brenda,

I can understand how important it is to know that your dog will continue to receive the same food that they’ve been thriving on. The answer is yes – we guarantee that the quality of our ingredients will stay at the same high standard as always and we won’t allow this to slip. You won’t be finding any Purina products in your order as our custom kibbles are fundamental to everything we do.

Purina have recognised what we are capable of doing and the direction we’re taking the market in. They want to be a part of this knowing that no-one else can do what we do, and we chose the investment so we can provide our food to as many dogs as possible. Tailored nutrition is the future of dog food and we understand our responsibility as the only company able to provide it.

I’ll see how it pans out but any evidence of the Purina approach and Ralph and I will be walkies I’m afraid. Truly gutted you’ve taken this decision – you’ve been the Waitrose of pet food but this makes you the Asda. Surely there were other places you could have sought investment to grow such a great product and model?! :((

We are very sorry to hear you feel this way about the investment, we don’t see our partners in this way but instead took the investment in order to help us do what we do best even better and help more dogs live life to the fullest with tailor-made food to suit all their needs.

All I can say is good luck in this new venture, sometimes it’s important to move with the time and as long as your wonderful products remain the same in quality and care for each individual pet, then I am happy to continue to keep carry on receiving your products directly from you. As you are aware Quincy’s life has been completely changed by your products, especially in helping with the treatment of his hypothyroidism alongside his medication for that disease.

I only wish that you would go into the cat food business, as I have a 3 (just) year old cat who’s survived lifesaving surgeries after horrendous injuries when he was run over in his first 8 months, then a badger attack a year later and more recently gallstones, linked to his injuries from the badger attack. I’m sure that you would have been able to come up with the appropriate food to help him on these occasions, instead of the trial and error situation I’ve had to face trying to obtain the correct formula to help with his recovery. Whereas now I have a 9 kg cat who started life as a slim male, but now is a female after a lifesaving operation after the badger attack.

I am sure many of your customers, like me want dog food that is actually good for them AND is from a company that actually cares about animals and their humans. 310. Oh boy, tails.com is being taken over. Nestle have now a majority stake. I looked at a recent interview where the following question came up and was answered by Calum Macrae (Purina Regional Director with responsibility for the UK): The important word in his answer is “short term”
Question: There may be consumers out there who are concerned about possible changes to their service at Tails.com, what would you say to them?

CM: Really nothing will change in the short term. Over time, obviously, what we hope is that we have things at Purina we can bring to Tails.com which ultimately will mean they are able to provide an even better proposition, even better products and an even better experience, that’s all.

To me, that reads as, yes, we like tails.com business model and we want it, and they will make changes. Noone guarantees that the current food composition will remain the same, they can’t, it’s a nestle brand now.. Not happy!

  311. JAMES & team,
Congratulations on securing investment, I understand all start ups need a plan to grow and ultimately exit, however your description of significant investment is not the same as giving a majority shareholding to someone else, as described in several of Purina/Nestle press releases.
This concerns me, the fact is therefore if true that your management team do not retain control or the ability to run as a stand-alone business in reality as you will report to a majority shareholder who will wish to influence short and/or long term value.
I hope as you say you can retain the principles that have got you this far, We and our dog Foxylady are big fans of your business, and will need to watch closely how this developes with refgard to service and ingredients if we are to continue using you.
I would add finally that as I said we are big supporters of what you have done this far and just wish you had taken non industry, independent investment at this stage.
Good luck for the future, fingers crossed, Foxylady.

Press release attached for others info. Nestle Purina PetCare has acquired a majority stake in Tails.com, a direct-to-consumer, tailor-made dog nutrition business based in Richmond, West London. With the rapid growth of personalised pet nutrition, as well as subscription services, Nestlé Purina’s shareholding in this digital first business offers significant growth opportunities for both companies.
Launched in 2014, Tails.com has brought tailored dog nutrition to consumers at affordable prices. The company was early to identify changes in the way consumers want to shop and care for their pets, and married digital technology, food innovation and new manufacturing techniques to provide food individually tailored according to factors such as a dog’s age, breed, size and level of activity.
Powered by a proprietary nutritional algorithm developed by vets, nutritionists and software engineers, the company now feeds more than 100,000 dogs in the UK. Tails.com customers also benefit from a convenient subscription service with home delivery, as well as access to an in-house nutrition support team. Tails.com will continue to operate as a stand-alone entity, with co-founder and CEO James Davidson at the helm.

Thank you and Foxylady for your kind wishes and I understand your concerns. This is on our terms so we’ll still be making our own decisions and working as an independent company.

We guarantee that the quality of the ingredients in Foxylady’s food will not change. We will always hold ourselves to the same high standards we set on our first day as a business and we continue on our mission to change the world of pet food for good.

What was wrong with staying how you were and allowing the business to grow and evolve with time rather than rush into a relationship with such a dodgy partner? I have been delighted to have found your products and services and probably smug at times that my dog is fed such quality food, particularly as he has such a sensitive tummy and we need to be very careful what we feed him. From now forwards I will be aware of what else is on the market ready for that inevitable time when changes occur at Tails.com, as I am sure they will despite your protestations. As a dog owner myself, I completely appreciate how important your dogs health is to you- it’s the most important thing to us as well. This has always been the case, and the investment from Purina won’t change how we feel. We guarantee that the quality of the ingredients we use won’t change, this is not something we’d ever compromise on.

As a start-up, we’re always looking to grow and reach as many people and dogs as we can. Purina have seen what we’ve achieved, and we’ve chosen them to be a part of our future growth. This investment means that we can do what we do best, better. We’ll be able to provide even more support to you and other customers, while supplying even more dogs with tailored blends.

After much thought have decided to stay with you. Billy is 16yrs old now and these days he runs for his food which is great to see.

  328. Looks to me like Purina have installed a good PR team already. The replies to concerns are carefully crafted to avoid actually saying anything significant.

Bottom line would seem to be you got into bed with the wrong people. Your previous investors will happily count their loot while the rest of you try to avoid losing the bulk of your customer base.

I’ll be looking for an alternative too, the answers above are far too glib to be believed.

  329. I made the decision many years ago to avoid Nestle company products, so I am devastated that your ethos is being marred by links to such an unethical company. Whilst I applaud your decision to try to maintain your current high quality kibble, and don’t get me wrong as an owner of two very fussy and grain intolerant greyhounds your company has been a godsend, I cannot in all good conscience continue to buy your product, knowing that some of my hard earned money will inevitably find it’s way to Purina, and eventually Nestle. I also worry that you are naive if you think that such a massive company will not have an impact on your product at some point in the future. I’m absolutely gutted, but I have to maintain my ethical standpoint especially with a company as heinous as Nestle, and with other dog food suppliers on the market I will be forced to cancel my current order at my earliest opportunity. If you decide at some point in the future to sever ties with Nestle I will be more than happy to return as a loyal customer. With regret AJ

    • Hi Angie,

This is heartbreaking to hear and of course we understand that personal decisions make up a big part of these types of things. If you do ever come back to us in future, we’d love to see you again.

  330. I am very concerned that the questions are not being answered.
Will there be any change whatsoever, in the actual source or origin of your ingredients ? Including supplier? You keep repeating the same standard response that the quality and recipes wont change but I am guessing the content will be sourced differently. We are very concerned about this collaboration. Purina and Nestle have a bad reputation. What a shame. Our dogs have done well on Tails and we also wanted to use an ethical company.

    • Hi Sarah,

No, we will continue to make our own decisions and source our own ingredients. We guarantee that this new relationship won’t be changing that.

  332. I am another customer who will not be associated with nestle due to their unethical marketing or Purina due to their poor quality food. I have only just joined and I was devastated when I realised today you are involved with people like that. A very poor choice of investor if you are truly behind your marketing pledges. I am cancelling my subscription now

Jack is doing a great job at answering our questions and keeping in touch. Though, at the end of the day I doubt very much big decisions about changes in the company will not be up to him and he’ll need to continue doing what he’s doing like anyone else in corporations as it’s his job. Quite frankly it’s a shame small businesses give in to large corporations who use various dirty tactics to overtake them. We’ve all seen the same thing happening again and again… pretty much every business taken over ended up in a bad shape loosing loyal customers. Profits has always been priority number one in order to keep large corporation going so why would things be different this time :/
